Google Ads Customer Match lets you upload first-party customer data, such as email addresses and phone numbers, and reach those people on Search, the Shopping tab, Gmail, YouTube and Display. In 2026 the upload format added IP address and timestamp fields, and Google expects the match-rate gains from them to begin in October.
For revenue teams, that makes the CRM a direct input to paid media again. The catch is that eligibility rules, formatting mistakes and low match rates quietly shrink most lists before they serve. Below: how Customer Match works, what Google requires, what the new fields change, and how to run it as part of a CRM operating rhythm.
Google Ads Customer Match, explained for revenue teams
Customer Match turns a list of your own customers or leads into an audience you can target, observe, bid on or exclude. Google serves those audiences across Search, the Shopping tab, Gmail, YouTube and Display, and campaigns using Smart Bidding and optimized targeting automatically include every Customer Match list in the account. Under manual bidding, lists are not included automatically, so you add them yourself (Google Ads Help).
This is a different job from offline conversion import. Feeding closed deals back into bidding teaches Google which clicks become revenue, which we covered in Google Ads lead quality from CRM data. Customer Match decides who sees the ads in the first place: existing customers you want to exclude from acquisition campaigns, accounts you want to upsell, or lapsed buyers worth a second try. The same segments usually drive your post-purchase email sequence, so build them once in the CRM.
Customer Match requirements and the $50,000 spend threshold
Google's policy requires a good history of policy compliance and a good payment history. Every policy-compliant advertiser can use Customer Match in the Observation setting and for exclusions. Targeting, along with manual bid adjustments, requires 90 days of Google Ads history and more than USD 50,000 in total lifetime spend (Google Ads policy). Smaller accounts can still exclude customers and watch how known audiences perform, which is useful on its own.
The data rules matter as much as the spend rule. Lists must come from data collected in a first-party context, your privacy policy has to disclose that you share data with third parties such as Google, and consent is required where the law demands it, including under Google's EU User Consent Policy. Lists last a maximum of 540 days, and a list must have at least 100 members added or updated within that window to stay eligible (Google Ads policy).
Customer Match match rates and the formatting rules that raise them
Expect a gap between the list you upload and the audience you get. Google says most advertisers' match rates fall between 29 and 62 percent (Google Ads Help), and it also notes that match rate "isn't an indicator of list performance" (Google Ads Help). A smaller, well-chosen list of high-value buyers can beat a large, poorly matched one.
The fixes are mostly hygiene. Add as many match keys per person as you have, such as email plus phone. Normalize before hashing: trim spaces, lowercase emails, put phone numbers in E.164 format, and remove periods before the domain in gmail.com addresses. Hash with SHA256 or let Google hash for you (Google Ads Help). Google's troubleshooting page adds that files need at least 100 user records, that emails with accents won't match, and that only the first 100 rows are pre-checked, so an error further down can slip through (Google Ads Help). Uploads can take up to 48 hours to process.
The 2026 Customer Match upload adds IP address and timestamp
Google's upload guide now lists eight column headers, adding User IP address and User interaction timestamp to email, phone, first name, last name, country and zip. IP and timestamp values go in unhashed, a timestamp cannot be sent without an IP address, and an IP sent without a timestamp defaults to the latest known user of that address. IP matching is not supported for users in the EEA, the UK or Switzerland (Google Ads Help). The help page spells the timestamp header more than one way, so download Google's current template before building an export.
The change arrived first in the API. Google's Data Manager API added IP address ingestion for Customer Match on May 28, 2026 (Google for Developers), and its developer guide says "match rate improvements from these signals are expected to begin in October 2026" (Google for Developers). Google's policy page also recommends Data Manager or the Data Manager API over the older Google Ads API path for new integrations. If your CRM records the IP address and time of a form fill or login, include both on the next upload and compare match rates against the previous file.
Loyalty Customer Match brings member pricing into AI Mode
Retailers with a loyalty program have a second reason to keep lists current. Google Merchant Center now states that loyalty benefits are eligible to appear in AI Mode and Gemini Apps, in the U.S. only, and that Customer Match is required to show those benefits to known members on Ads (Google Merchant Center Help). The loyalty program feature itself covers a list of markets that includes the U.S., Canada, the UK, Australia and several EU countries.
In practice, member pricing shown inside an AI shopping answer depends on Google knowing the shopper is a member, and Customer Match is how it knows. That ties loyalty data, product feeds and AI commerce together, a direction we tracked in our explainer on the Universal Commerce Protocol.
Running CRM audiences in Google Ads on a weekly rhythm
Treat Customer Match lists as CRM segments with owners, definitions and refresh dates. Useful starting segments include current customers to exclude from prospecting, high-value customers for upsell, lapsed customers for win-back, and, for B2B, contacts at open opportunities or target accounts, which pairs naturally with an account-based marketing program. Google recommends that API uploads append to lists at least once per day (Google Ads Help), and in the EEA both ad_user_data and ad_personalization consent must be granted or the data is not processed (Google Ads Help).
Measure lift with a holdout. Google reports that applying Customer Match list signals produced a 5.3 percent conversion uplift in its own 2021 to 2022 data (Google Ads Help), which is a platform claim worth testing against your own results. Compare conversion rate and cost per acquisition for matched audiences against a held-out segment, and review list sizes weekly.
