ChatGPT ads are sponsored units shown below ChatGPT responses to logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans. OpenAI opened self-serve buying in May 2026, and on October 5 it announced a visual ad format and a wider set of measurement partners. For most SMB and B2B teams, the sensible first move is a small, fully tracked test.
This guide covers what changed this month, what the platform costs, what the early performance data shows, and a four-week test you can run on the $25 daily minimum.
ChatGPT ads, explained for SMB and B2B marketers
OpenAI began testing ads in the U.S. on February 9, 2026, for logged-in adults on the Free and Go tiers. Ads are matched to the topic of the conversation, past chats, and past ad interactions, carry a sponsored label, and stay away from sensitive subjects such as health, mental health, and politics (OpenAI). Plus, Pro, and every Business plan remain ad-free, and each unit shows an advertiser name, favicon, headline, description, image, and landing page (OpenAI Help Center).
The platform has scaled quickly. Self-serve Ads Manager and cost-per-click bidding arrived on May 5 (OpenAI). By September 23, OpenAI said ChatGPT Ads was live in more than 60 countries, had passed a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in under 200 days, and had tens of thousands of advertisers (OpenAI). Those revenue and advertiser counts are OpenAI's own figures.
The October ChatGPT ads update: visual ads and new measurement
On October 5, OpenAI announced a visual ad format that appears during image generation for Free and Go users, labeled and kept apart from the image being created. Testing starts later in October in the U.S. with an initial group of advertisers (OpenAI), and TechCrunch reports the format is U.S.-only for now (TechCrunch).
The measurement changes matter more for most budgets. Hightouch, Tealium, and LiveRamp can now send conversion data into ChatGPT Ads, and attribution partners include AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Northbeam, and DV Rockerbox. Haus, Measured, and WorkMagic are working with OpenAI on early geo-based incrementality experiments, DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science are developing brand suitability pilots, and reports can add a one-day view-through window to click attribution (OpenAI Ads). If assistant traffic still lands in your referral bucket, start with our GA4 AI traffic setup.
The surface around the ads is shifting too. GPT-6 with Intelligent UI, which adds charts, forms, and interactive elements to answers, began rolling out to Free and Go users on October 8 (OpenAI).
ChatGPT ads cost, bidding, and budget rules
ChatGPT ads run on a relevance-weighted, second-price auction. Advertisers pick Views for impression billing, Clicks for cost-per-click, or Conversions, which optimizes toward a conversion event and, on click billing, still charges per valid click. OpenAI recommends opening Clicks campaigns at a maximum bid of $3 to $5 (OpenAI Help Center).
The U.S. minimum daily budget is $25, and it works as a seven-day average. A campaign can spend up to twice its daily budget on a single day but never more than seven times it across the week (OpenAI Help Center). At $25 a day and a $3 to $5 bid, plan on roughly five to eight clicks a day. That is enough to judge traffic quality within a month and too thin to read a long B2B sales cycle. Teams already running Google Ads AI Max will find the move from keywords to intent signals familiar.
Early ChatGPT ads performance data and its limits
Independent numbers are still scarce, and OpenAI's help center says it has no performance benchmarks across advertisers or industries yet. A Graphite report built on Similarweb panel data put all-time click-through rates at 0.6% to 0.75% in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand through mid-September, against 1.21% to 1.91% in Brazil, Mexico, Japan, and South Korea. B2B SaaS was the largest U.S. category at 19.9% of impressions (Search Engine Journal). Similarweb sells the ad-tracking tool behind that panel, so read the figures as directional.
SE Ranking's study of 50,006 U.S. commercial prompts, collected on July 23, found an ad on 25.94% of them. About one ad in seven (14.35%) had no real topical link to its prompt. The company's own two-week campaign drew 1,263 clicks at a 1.30% click-through rate and very few sign-ups (SE Ranking).
OpenAI's partner results look stronger. DV Rockerbox measured WeightWatchers' attributed cost per acquisition at 15.3% below its blended paid search benchmark, and OpenAI says 52.7% of eligible one-day view-through conversions in an early analysis happened within an hour of the impression (OpenAI Ads). These are vendor-reported cases. Your own test is the benchmark that counts.
A four-week ChatGPT ads test plan
Here is how to advertise on ChatGPT without spending on clicks you cannot judge. The plan assumes one campaign, U.S. targeting, and the $25 daily minimum, which comes to about $700 over four weeks.
- Confirm your buyers can see ads. Ads reach only Free and Go users. If your best prospects are heavy professional users on paid plans, the ad-eligible audience may miss them, which is the gap SE Ranking hit in its own test.
- Install tracking before spending. Set up the OpenAI pixel or Conversions API for your key event, add UTM parameters to every landing page URL, and check signal quality in Event Quality Score.
- Write narrow context hints. Build one ad group per customer need. OpenAI's own example prefers "cushioned everyday running shoes for beginners training for their first 5K" over "running shoes". Add Negative Phrases if your account qualifies.
- Launch on the Clicks objective. Open at a $3 to $5 maximum CPC and leave bids alone through the first seven-day pacing window.
- Report on cost per qualified lead. Compare cost per qualified lead or purchase with paid search, using the click window plus the one-day view-through window. Skip CTR comparisons with Google, since the two measure different units.
- Decide in week four. Scale if cost per qualified lead lands near your search benchmark, hold if traffic converts but volume is thin, and stop if clicks never turn into pipeline.
The context hint example comes from OpenAI's ad group guide, and the pixel, Event Quality Score, and view-through details from its measurement update. Pixel and Conversions API setup is the kind of tracking work our digital marketing and technology team handles before any spend goes live.
Paid ChatGPT placement and organic AI visibility as separate channels
Buying the sponsored slot does little for the answer above it. In SE Ranking's data, the advertiser's domain showed up among the answer's cited sources in only 3.63% of placements (SE Ranking).
That puts ads and answer engine optimization on separate budgets with separate jobs. Ads buy reach among Free and Go users at the moment of a decision. Citations reach everyone, including the paid-plan professionals who never see an ad, and our AEO playbook covers how to earn them.
Starting with ChatGPT ads this quarter
Run the test if you sell to consumers or small businesses, already track conversions, and can set aside about $700 for four weeks. Hold off if tracking is incomplete or your buyers mostly live on paid AI plans. Keep the organic work going either way. Our fractional CMO team can scope the test with you, or talk to us directly.
