"We design the things you never think about. The bench with shade on it, the path to the bus, the schoolyard. Everything outside the building. If you never notice it, we did our job."
The three you get asked every time
"So what is landscape architecture?"
Do not define it. Describe the result. "Everything outside the building. Where the paths go, where people gather, what grows, how you get from the car park to the door without getting wet or lost."
"So you plant the trees?"
"Did the architect build your house? Did the electrical engineer do your wiring?" Then: "We decide where it goes, what survives there, how people move past it, and who it is for."
"What kind of buildings do you do?"
"I don't build buildings. I build everything outside the buildings." Then name three: schoolyards, parks, civic plazas.
